Philthy Toddler (Joshua Fletcher) is quickly becoming well known across the Drum and bass music industry mixing Liquid and Dubstep in a style that is growing fast. He started off around 4 years ago at the young age of 15 were he began mixing at small clubs every so often, after a year and a half he got recognized by a small recording studio that was Sheffield based now since his success he’s now producing with RAM records who also deal with top names such as; Andy C, sub focus, Culture shock and Chase and status.

His latest EP released got him into the top 10 of the charts reaching 7 making him the most successful Drum and Bass artist in the pop industry. Fans have been waiting anxiously since his success to find out when he would be touring, yesterday on his official site a list of Dates and venues were published.

There are rumors going round that He is producing a new album with Excision; which will be a change and help with experience into producing and mixing with Dubstep. He also commented that he would be playing an odd song here and there from his sessions with excision while on tour. Apparently he may also be doing a gig at the Sheffield arena around the same time when he is in Sheffield.

These are mock ups of the pages that i will be doing for my main task.

Location of my main Image

The location of my main image for my front cover and double page spread will be based here, in a friends games room. I am using this due to him having equipment that i would like to include in the photo. The Photos will be done while dark with maybe some simple lihting to help bring out some of the details in the photo.



The main props will be the decks that are shown in the image below and my freind who owns them will be shown using these. He will be wearing Casual clothes either a black or white hoody depending how the image will look from the lighting, also wearing headphones over his head.

Conventional Features

After viewing other magazines including ones with a similar background towards music i found some features that regularly pop up on most or even every page.

Front cover

The Main image is the biggest image and the main focus of the magazine which then the audience would expect an in depth article on the subject, this is also placed in the centre, the mast head is at the top of the page and the main headline is layered over the main image but not overlapping any of the main features of the photo. Cover lines and plugs are scattered around the border of the page staying away from the main image/ headline. The barcode is placed in the bottom right corner to stay out of the way due to it isn't part of the information it just has to be put on for legal reasons. The price is very small so its less recognizable and made to be seen as a "small price" this may be due to it been expensive but if the stories on the front attract you this wont put you off.

Contents page

The main conventions from looking at other magazine are that they also have a main image that takes up around 1/4 to 1/4 a page usually placed in the top half with a contents title in the top right staying similar to some front cover layouts. The contents pages main all have an unordered numbering system and using a alphabetic or subject related way of putting across the pages. Small images about some of the subjects are dotted between stories.

Double Page Spread

The features that are seen as conventional to a music magazine double page spread are similar and most magazines that Ive viewed have the same basic layout.
The image is always related to the story and covers the whole 2 pages but the main focus are off centre so that the crease doesn't affect the picture. Also the text about the story is kept to the borders of the page mainly the right and left side and headlined at the top. In a couple of the examples the headlines are quotes that then lead the story into why they might of said this. This quote would be shown on the front cover. Also the main image on the front cover is related and has the same characters in this but maybe shot differently. My double page will be done like this to give the reader the story about the main focus of the front page.

Target Audience

My basic target audience that my magazine will be aimed at will be teenagers/ young adult that are into a variety of music but mostly enjoy drum and bass. It will be targeted at people that like looking at new groups that are coming into the music business, helping promote them and give support towards making there popularity grow. The magazine will be aimed at people that listen to music constantly and may say "music is my life". The magazine will be also help promote by CD's and downloads so aiming it at the market that have technology to listen to music in various ways.

NME Front Cover

This Front cover is great it isnt as packed as the kerrang magazine but this makes it more easier to see the main story. It has a simple layout with the red top which now is noticable to most music fans. From this it uses a recuring theme over the page to boost the significance of the cover lines. The main image therfore isnt over crowded which makes it easier to see which image is for the story also the use of the word "Plus" gives you the feeling of more, it gives you the band name which you maybe interested in so then you would like to find out what theve writen about them so you look in this is a clever way of attracting more customers something that i would use.

Kerrang double page spread

This double page spread clearly is put in to a make people emotive, the use of language attracts people to think why? a story that does this is used wisely to attract people to buy there magazine. This also uses a theme through text and props and is very effective. Basing the theme on the feel of the stroy eg. emotion would be a thoughtful idea. Again the text is surrounding the image and gives you the basic idea of the story from the use of bigger fonts and styles.

Kerrang Double page spread

This double page spread comes from the main headline on the front of the magazine this is what im going to do when producing mine, i think this is a great idea because this story is the main focus of the front so having a story on it would explain reason to with it. This is also another representation of how the text fits around the main image, something that would be used in my double page spread. The colour scheme used in this matches with the clothes worn this really help the story and certain words stand out, they also do this by using various fonts and sizes.
These pages are numbered and they make it look professional even though it isn't that complicated the use of the magazine name is effective and doesn't make the numbers look boring.

Kerrang Double page spread

This Double page spread has a great layout and gives me a brilliant idea into how to set out my double page story. Also were the Having any information is placed around the images of it being out of the way makes the image more noticeable and seeable and the quoted title that appeared in the contents and front page page which is an idea that could be used.

Kerrang Contents

This Contents page is really smart and keeps to the way that the front cover starts off it has clever stars next to the pages that have been covered on the front page that may have attracted the reader. This maybe something that i will consider into putting into my contents. Also the use off little images are used in a way that helps put a better idea of a story to the reader. The colour scheme also stays throughout and goves expression on titles that are on the page, also font and styles are identical. These are both things that will occur when i come to producing my contents
